I tend to be diligent when looking at labels because a lot of brands add ingredients that my body will not tolerate.

Spices, predominantly “spice mixtures” like “Montreal steak seasoning” or the like are always suspect for additional components that are not necessary like hydrogenated oils, silicon dioxide, maltodextrin**, sugar, salt, MSG or anti-caking agents*.

When I first started paying attention to labels I was surprised to find that the majority of chili seasonings including the above ingredients. At a loss, I decided to make my own from the spices that I already have. 

This recipe calls for smoked paprika and ground chipotle pepper. These add the smoke flavor and I suggest that you play with the amount that you include in your version of this chili seasoning. The measurements in this recipe bring a very slight smoke flavor. You may also add chipotle based salsa that brings a great overall smoke flavor into your chili. If you prefer a non-smoke recipe remove the chipotle pepper and the smoked paprika and add common paprika.

Here’s a fun fact, all of the ingredients that are listed in most chili seasonings are commonly added to a chili recipe in addition to the “chili seasoning” itself. This knowledge will help you adjust the taste of your own chili to your liking!

Smoked Chili Powder

Ready in 5 minutes

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons organic smoked paprika
  • 2 teaspoons organic oregano
  • ¼ teaspoon organic dried, chopped onion
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons organic cumin
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons organic garlic powder
  • 3/4 teaspoon organic onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon organic cayenne pepper more or less to taste (optional)
  • ½ teaspoon organic crushed red peppers
  • ¼ teaspoon organic ground chipotle

Preparation

  1. Whisk all together in a bowl. 
  2. Store in a repurposed spice shaker. 

Tip:

2-3 tbs is a common measurement for chili made for 8 servings.
